Freedom Day: 27 April 1994 - 27 April 2014: Celebrating 20 Years of Democracy

Freedom Day on 27 April is the key annual celebration of South Africa's first non-racial democratic elections of 1994. It marks the end of over three hundred years of colonialism, segregation and white minority rule and the establishment of a new democratic government led by Nelson Mandela and a new state subject to a new and progressive constitution. The holding of the first non-racial elections was the culmination of years of struggle and a negotiated settlement which led to the unbanning of the liberation organisations, the release of political prisoners and the return of exiles and the formal all party negotiations which drafted an interim constitution.

This year, South Africa will be celebrating the 20th anniversary of the April 1994 election, an opportunity to analyse what has been achieved along this way and what the challenges of this difficult transition, the subsequent democratic consolidation and the construction of a new political authority in South Africa are.

Berlin will also be celebrating this anniversary. From 28 to 30 August 2014, the Embassy of the Republic of South Africa, Berlin and Haus der Kulturen der Welt (HKW) will offer a three-day festival, comprising lectures and panel discussions, a cinematographic retrospective and music concerts featuring amongst others the outstanding Hugh Masekela.
