Philanthropy needed to sustain SA's democracy

In an effort to grow local giving that contributes actively to social change, exciting new platforms have been launched this month by Inyathelo-The South African Institute for Advancement to showcase philanthropy in South Africa.

Philanthropy SA, both a newsletter and a web portal – at philanthropy.org.za, will provide current information on what is emerging in the South African Philanthropic sector and internationally.

“It is imperative for us to grow a local philanthropic movement, especially since international funding is constantly on the decrease,” says Shelagh Gastrow, Executive Director of Inyathelo.

“If we do not find a way to sustain our own civil society, our democracy will not survive.

“Philanthropy SA has been initiated for South African philanthropists and foundations in an effort to grow leaders in ‘giving to effect change’.”

The website and newsletter will not only provide information and news on what is happening in the sector, but will offer support in various ways. Users will have access to a range of resources such as top tips on giving, philanthropy facts, and legislation pertaining to this sector.

Also available on the site are a number of free and essential downloadable documents and links, including research on how donors make their giving decisions, and publications such as 'A Guide to Giving'.

Using the web’s interactive capabilities grantmakers, donors and philanthropists will be able to engage in discussions and debates around issues such as the effects of philanthrocapitalism, the demand for measurements of social impact, and the levels of risk involved in giving, to name a few. Investment news from top financial experts will also be available on the Philanthropy SA portal.

Gastrow says that although one has to register on the site to participate in debates and discussions, or to access the items for download, the process to do so is really easy and currently bears no cost to the user. Once registered, the user will have access to the wealth of resources available and will be sent the monthly newsletter.

“Anyone who works for, is associated with, or who is on governing boards of local foundations and trust funds, as well as individual philanthropists, donor organisations and grantmakers, will all benefit from registering on the site.”

Information on the Inyathelo Philanthropy Awardees from 2007 until 2009 can also be found on the site. These awards build awareness of both philanthropic giving and role models of good philanthropic practice by recognising individuals for the sustainable social impact they have achieved through their giving.
