Nelson Mandela Day 2022 - Visit to the Children and Youth Centre Bolle
More than every fifth child in Germany grows up in poverty. Germany-wide there are more than 6,500 minor street children. The Kinder- und Jugendhaus Bolle (Children and Youth Centre) in Berlin is a project of the association Straßenkinder e.V. (Street Children), which looks after up to 150 socially disadvantaged and refugee children a day (6-11 years, 11-13 years, 14-18 years) by providing them with a safe learning and playing space, loving care, a warm meal and life skills. In doing so, the Children and Youth Centre Bolle seeks to prevent these children from ending up on the streets of Berlin.
Straßenkinder e.V. is 95% funded by private donations.
Under International Nelson Mandela Day 2022 theme “Do what you can - with what you have - where you are,” the staff members of the South African Embassy in Berlin generously donated a great number of needed items, i.e. books, toys, school and sports items, and learning material. Ms Laura Joyce, Counsellor (Political), Mr Justin Kemp, First Secretary (Political), Ms Sabine Franzke, Marketing, Media and Webmaster and Mr Yunes Dinie, Chauffeur, visited the Children and Youth Centre to hand over the collected donations. They were received by Mr Eckhard Baumann, Chairman, and Ms Isabelle Baumann, Media and Public Relations of Kinder- und Jugendhaus Bolle.
