Broadband plan will make Jozi a digital city

Johannesburg will be transformed into a digital city over the next three years with work set to begin on the Johannesburg Broadband Network Project (JBNP).  The R1 billion telecommunications infrastructure plan will result in a city-wide, high-speed broadband network, bringing Johannesburg in line with international city trends.

Swedish cellular company Ericsson has been awarded the tender for the deployment of the network. Work on Phase 1 of the project is set to begin in earnest in April this year, with roll out to continue over the next three years.

Ericsson will rely on wireless networking and container kiosks to supply citizens of Johannesburg with internet access. According to the City, the network will provide a minimum of 1.2 terabits a second of municipal core bandwidth and bring with it WiFi (wireless technology), wimax (wireless data over long distances), FTTP (fibre to the premises) technology and power line communications.

This project aims to build a strong ICT infrastructure for the City and to bring ICT closer to citizens at a cost effective price, by selling off spare capacity to operators.

The network will be owned by the City of Johannesburg on an open access platform which will create business opportunities for both big and small companies to act as service providers. However unlike commercial networks being set up by other telecoms companies, the JBNP is driven by a socio-economic development objective. The City will roll out the network to central areas as well as the most underserviced parts of the City including Soweto, Orange Farm and Poortjie, thus allowing small businesses in these area to flourish by providing broadband services to their communities.

Councillor Parks Tau, Member of the Mayoral Committee for Finance and Economic Development, says that the JBNP is an indication of the City's commitment to bringing it in line with international trends in municipal broadband deployment.  "We regard access to broadband as a key driver of economic growth and wealth generation. Through this initiative we will ensure that all the citizens of Joburg gain access to universally available, reliable and affordable broadband,”says Tau.

The network will reduce the cost of telecommunications in the city while improving service delivery and increasing access to information technology.

Jason Ngobeni, Executive Director for Economic Development in the City, adds: "The benefits and possibilities of a digital city are numerous for not only the City and its entities but for residents, business, hospitals, educational institutions, tourism and entertainment."
