Interest in voting grows: IEC

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) is hard at work preparing for South Africa's fourth general elections on April 22. With the growth of multi-party democracy, South Africa has also experienced a considerable rise in the number of registered political parties from 27 in 1994 to 156 in 2009.

IEC Chief Electoral officer, Pansy Tlakula, says statistics show there has been growth in the level of interest in voting. She says the total number of registered people on the voters roll is just over 23 million.

She adds: “The majority of people who registered for the 2009 elections are young people between the ages of 18 and 39 - that is where you'll find the bulk of the people registering. As you go towards the 50s, 60s, 70s and so forth, the numbers taper. So, that for me is an indication that young people in this country are interested in participating in the electoral processes.”
