German manager Jochen Zeitz is planning one of the largest museums of contemporary art on the African continent, the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (MOCAA). A former grain silo on the waterfront in Cape Town will be transformed into a museum of contemporary art comprising of 6,000 square metres of exhibition space, 80 galleries, reading areas and seminar rooms, a bookstore, restaurant and coffee shop. British architect, Thomas Heatherwick was commissioned to design the futuristic building.
Zeitz and South-African curator Mark Coetzee have been collecting artworks for the MOCAA since the turn of the millennium. Their aim is to select a number of African artists who represent a region, an idea or a theme.
