The South African Embassy in Berlin Commemorates South African Freedom Day on 27 April 2023

The South African Embassy in Berlin, Germany, has hosted a successful reception to commemorate and celebrate South Africa’s Freedom Day. On 27 April 1994, all South Africans of voting age went to the polls to participate in the country’s first democratic and free elections, to elect the first democratically elected president of South Africa, Mr Nelson Mandela.

This year, South Africa celebrates Freedom Month under the theme: “Consolidating and Safeguarding Our Democratic Gains."

The Ambassador of the Republic of South Africa, H.E. Ambassador PS Sizani, was honoured to host Ms Sarah Bernardy, Head of the Division dealing with Sub-Saharan Africa, African Union, Southern Africa and the Great Lakes Region of the Federal Foreign Office, as the key note speaker representing the German Government.

Ambassador Sizani reflected on South Africa’s goal of national unity and social cohesion and reminded that South Africans do not dare to forget the sacrifices made by many to ensure democracy and freedom for the country. South Africa’s history abounds with selfless patriots who paved the way for a democratic and free country.

Ms Bernardy conveyed the congratulations and well wishes on behalf of the German Government and German people to the South African Government and South African people on the celebrations of South Africa’s Freedom Day.

The South African Embassy would like to thank its sponsors, Mack & Schühle AG and CapeSpan, for their generous contributions to ensure a successful event.
