Invitation to Panel Discussion: "Nelson Mandela’s 100th Birthday Be the legacy!" 16 October 2018, 18h, FES

This year Nelson Mandela, freedom fighter and the first freely elected President of South Africa, would have been 100 years old. Mandela was a shining light both politically and morally. He dedicated his life to the struggle against apartheid and oppression. The price he paid was 27 years in prison. After his release in 1990 he devoted himself to achieving justice and reconciliation between blacks and whites in an effort to unite a deeply divided country. He was an inspiration and role model for people all over the world – he remains so today.

Under the slogan "Be the legacy!" we would like to remember Nelson Mandela, honour his life’s work, outline the stages of his life and discuss his legacy for South Africa and the world. In doing so we would also like to look at the current situation in South Africa and what Nelson Mandela's legacy means to today's young people.

We cordially invite you to participate in our discussion, within the framework of this joint event convened by the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, the South African Embassy in Berlin and the German Foreign Office.

Please register your commitment to attend this event by 8 October 2018 by email at: fes.afrika(at)fes.de
