SAMission at Work: Courtesy Visit by SA Home Affairs Minister, Prof Mkhize

On Tuesday, South Africa's Home Affairs Minister Prof Hlengiwe Buhle Mkhize, who was attending the Global Forum on Migration and Development at the German Foreign Office this week, paid a courtesy visit to Ambassador Sizani at the SAEmbassy in Berlin.

Prof Mkhize is South Africa's Home Affairs Minister since March 2017. Prior to this latest appointment, Prof Mkhize served as Ambassador of South Africa to the Netherlands from 2005 to 2008, as Deputy Minister of Correctional Services from 2009 to 2012, Deputy Minister of Economic Development from 2012 until 2014 and as Deputy Minister of Telecommunications and Postal Services from 2014 until 30 March 2017. She also is Treasurer General of the ANC Women's League (ANCWL) and has been a member of the National Executive Committee of the ANCWL since 2008.

Prof Mkhize was in Berlin to attend the Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) which took place from 28 to 30 June 2017 at the Federal Foreign Office. GFMD is a recent initiative of the United Nations Member States to address the migration and development interconnections in practical and action-oriented ways. It is an informal, non-binding, voluntary and government-led process that marks the culmination of more than a decade of international dialogue on the growing importance of the linkages between migration and development. It reflects the progressive acknowledgement of the limits of a strictly national approach to migration questions and implications at global level in an intergovernmental framework. In view of the societal implications of these issues, civil society representatives have also been involved from the outset in this process.
