South African Environmentalist Andrew Zaloumis Receives Prestigious KfW-Bernhard-Grzimek-Award!

South African environmentalist Andrew Zaloumis has received the international Award for his commitment to conservation and management as CEO of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park on the KwaZulu-Natal east coast. The ceremony was held in Frankfurt, Germany on 3rd May 2017, the laudatory speech was given by Dr Fanny Douvere, coordinator of the UNESCO Marine Programme in Paris.

Under the direction of Zaloumis, iSimangaliso national park became South Africa's first UNESCO World Heritage site. Since 2002, his leadership has also marked a major economic shift for iSimanagliso and its 650,000 residents, due to measures such as the careful expansion of ecotourism, successful recultivation programmes and plans for the structural and economic development of the region: It was once the second poorest in South Africa with a poverty rate of over 80%, but his innovative programme has created more than 12,000 new jobs and has launched numerous scholarships and training programmes. Now the region contributes 6.8 % to the gross domestic product of the province of KwaZulu-Natal.
