South African Author Marlene van Niekerk Shortlisted for Man Booker Prize 2015

South African author, poet and professor in Afrikaans and Dutch at Stellenbosch University Marlene van Niekerk is one of four African authors on the list of ten nominations for the 2015’s Man Booker Prize. The announcement has been made at the University of Cape Town. On 19 May, the prize winner is to be announced at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London.

"This is a complete surprise. It was not on my furthest horizon. It is an affirmation of what one does and it is wonderful to be included in a list that gives such prominence to the global south," said Professor van Niekerk.

The other 3 African authors are: Mia Couto (Mozambique), Ibrahim al-Koni (Libya) and Alain Mabanckou (DRC).
