Habitat for Humanity receives cheque of 148.000 Euro at the Embassy of the Republic of South Africa

Berlin 18 August 2010. German actress Alexandra Neldel received a cheque of 148.000 Euro in the name of Habitat for Humanity Deutschland at the Embassy of the Republic of South Africa in Berlin. The money was donated by the international internet hosting company Hetzner Online. With this payment houses were financed at a building project in Mfuleni, South Africa.

I think this is a wonderful project and the fact that volunteers worked on the construction together with professionals and the families is great for community building and gives the young people great knowledge and insight into the construction industry which can be very useful for their future”, says Deputy Head of Mission Cassandra Mbuyane-Mokone.

Hetzner Online decided to use all set-up fees for new server orders during the soccer World Cup as donations for the so-called Youth Build Project 2010 in South Africa. „With the Youth Build Project 2010 we can help exactly there where help is most needed”, says Günther Müller, Managing Director at Hetzner Online.

Apart from the houses that are financed by Hetzner Online in the Province Western Cape another 30 houses were built in June and July 2010 with Habitat for Humanity in the Provinces Gauteng and Kwazulu-Natal. 45 families with a total of 230 family members have found a new and secure home through this project.

Hetzner Online has proven exemplary social responsibility with its donation. We hope that this will be an example for other companies to help other families in need to receive a safe roof over their heads”, says Manuela Kikillus, Managing Director for Habitat for Humanity Deutschland.

All houses of the Youth Build 2010 project were realized with the voluntary help of South African youths from different social classes. Every day 900 volunteers, amongst them future house tenants, helped with the construction. This work experience, skill transfer and the social engagement is meant to open professional perspectives for young people involved in the project.

Hetzner Online, Habitat for Humanity and the many volunteering young South Africans have shown in a fascinating way which great results can happen through such a cooperation”, says Alexandra Neldel.
