South African Embassy co-hosts a roundtable on “Learn from the past, prepare for the future”

The Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf) and the German National Academy of Sciences (Leopoldina) is currently hosting a workshop on “Infectious Diseases beyond COVID-19” in Berlin, Germany from 23 – 24 May 2023, co-chaired by Professor Quarraisha Abdool Karim (ASSAf) and Professor Stefan H.E. Kaufmann (Leopoldina). This workshop aims to discuss the impact and consequences of COVID-19 on the research of Infectious Diseases and the newest advances in research from a cross-regional perspective. 

Following the renewal of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between ASSAf and Leopoldina, the South African Embassy co-hosted a roundtable on “Learn from the past, prepare for the future” with Leopoldina and The Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf), a reception and networking session.

At the roundtable, Ambassador Stone Sizani spoke about how the close cooperation between South Africa and Germany in the area of infections deceases and the renewal of the agreement between Leopoldina and ASSAf on the 10th year anniversary of the agreement came about.

While ASSAf was represented by Professor Quarraisha Abdool Karim, Professor Salim Abdool Karim and Mr Melusi Thwala, Leopoldina was represented by Professor Ulla Bonas, Vice President, Professor Stefan H.E. Kaufmann, Ruth Narmann, Leopoldina, Deputy Head of International Relations (IR) Department and Dr Thomas Plötze, Leopoldina, IR Department, to name but a few.
