Heritage Day Seminar on 25 September 2024

On the evening of 25 September 2024, the South African Embassy in Berlin, Germany and the German South Africa Forum (DESAFOR) co-hosted a  joint Heritage Day seminar under the theme “Mission accomplished or unfinished business – South Africa’s way so far and future perspectives 30 years after the end of Apartheid” The keynote address was delivered by the struggle icon of the liberation  struggle, an activist and writer, Judge Albert “Albie” Sachs, who is the former Justice of the first Constitutional  Court of the democratic South Africa. His keynote address was titled “It was a long way to freedom, but there are still many miles to walk.”

Dr Maxine Rubin, a South African post-doctoral fellow at GIGA moderated a panel of young South African professionals living in Germany that was comprised of Ms Malebo Sephodi, Bongani Justice Makhubela and Lutho Kote as well as Judge Albie Sachs. The protagonists deliberated on the topic “The post-apartheid generation: expectations, disappointments and hopes” while Ambassador of South Africa to Germany, HE Stone Sizani was interviewed by Dr Rubin on the “Perspectives for South Africa-German bilateral relations”.
