On 23 March 2020 the South African President, Cyril Ramaphosa, announced a nationwide lockdown due to the growing spread of COVID-19 in our country. The lockdown will last for 21 days and will be in effect from midnight on Thursday, 26 March 2020 until midnight on Thursday 16 April 2020. This follows the address on the 15 March 2020 where a national state of disaster was declared due to the rising COVID-19 infection rate.
A number of these temporary measures will impact international travel to our beautiful city:
Further to that, during the lockdown all the borders will be closed and no airlines will be allowed to operate. No international passengers will be able to enter South Africa after midnight on 26 March.
International tourists already checked into accommodation establishments will not be allowed to leave the establishment unless they are en-route to an airport and can show proof of a confirmed reservation. Guests will be liable to pay their own accommodation costs. Embassies have to be informed and it is up to the Embassy to arrange a charter for its citizens to be repatriated.
