Minister Plenipotentiary Adv. MA Cassimjee

Minister Plenipotentiary Adv. MA Cassimjee has served since December 2016 as Minister Plenipotentiary at the South African Embassy in Berlin, Germany. He was born on 21 November 1965 in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. He completed a Bachelors degree and a Law degree at the University of Kwazulu /Natal. At university he was active in various community initiatives including relief agency work and the struggle against apartheid. He has also been actively involved in sports.

He began his career as a Candidate Attorney /Attorney at Leslie Simon Pretorius and Dawson in 1991, and then as a self- practicing Advocate accredited to the Pietermaritzburg Bar from 1993. Since October 1995 he has served at the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO). He completed his diplomatic Training in the Netherlands at the Clingendael Centre for International Relations and at the South African Foreign Service Institute.

He has served as Assistant (1995-1996) and Deputy Director (2005-2008) on the North Africa and Indian Ocean Islands Desk and the Brazil/Mercosur Desk respectively, as the Director (2011-2012) on the African Union Desk, which included selected AU Partnerships e.g. Africa-EU/ Africa-India/ Africa-South America/Africa-Turkey); Director (2012-2015): German Speaking (Germany, Switzerland, Lichtenstein), Nordic (Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Iceland) and Baltic States (Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania); Director (2015-2016): Regional Organisations, which included the SA-EU Strategic Partnership and the African, Caribbean and Pacific States group (ACP). He also served as Acting Chief Director (2016) on the Regional Organisations and North America (EU/ACP, USA and Canada) Desk.

Abroad, Adv. MA Cassimjee represented South Africa previously as 1st Secretary/Counsellor (1996-2000) in Washington DC; Acting Head of Mission (Interim) and Political Counsellor (2001-2005) in Kampala, Uganda and for a temporary period as Acting Head of Mission and Political Counsellor (2009-2010) in Dakar, Senegal.

During his career Adv. MA Cassimjee played an active role in promoting South Africa’s Foreign Policy in various fora of engagement at both bilateral and multilateral levels and has also participated as a Guest Speaker at various institutions and forums on foreign policy issues. He is married, with one son.
