Statement by H.E. Ambassador PS Sizani on the occasion of Heritage Day 2021 at the Embassy of the Republic of South Africa, Berlin

My fellow South Africans,

Dear friends of South Africa,

Heritage Day on 24 September recognises and celebrates the cultural wealth of our nation. South Africans celebrate the day by remembering the cultural heritage of the many cultures that make up the population of South Africa.

Each year in early spring, people across the nation get together to eat, drink and be merry, celebrating what makes us all uniquely South African.

As South Africans we specifically celebrate our rich and diverse heritage because we believe that our rich and varied cultural heritage has a profound power to help build our new nation.

We also know that the struggles against the injustice and inequities of the past are part of our national identity; they are part of our culture. We furthermore realise that, if indeed our past and acknowledging those who have lost their lives in seeking a new South Africa nation are celebrated, we will be able to achieve our goal of a non-racial, non-sexist democracy.

In recent years, National Heritage Day has become synonymous with National Braai Day. Some call it Shisa Nyama or Ukosa, while others call it a braai, but whatever the occasion, nothing beats gathering around a wood fire to cook a meal and celebrate together.

The COVID-19 Pandemic has exacerbated many social problems including access to food and housing, unemployment and interpersonal crimes, especially the scourge of gender-based violence. Let us use this celebration of our heritage to enhance social cohesion, nation building and social responsibility.

As Germany has now removed South Africa from the list of high risk areas, I would encourage you to take the opportunity again to travel to South Africa to experience, first-hand, South Africa’s culture and heritage.

I thank you.
