Statement of Behalf of H.E. Ambassador Stone Sizani on the Current Situation in South Africa, 16 July 2021

In response to concerns raised by our friends in Germany, I wish to make the following statement: The government of South Africa is working with the private sector to ensure a sufficient supply chain of food and fuel. Stakeholders in the agriculture value chain have committed to work together with government in responding to the challenges related to the food supply chain. The government indicated that there are sufficient food supplies in the country and that the immediate problem in supply chains in KwaZulu-Natal are receiving urgent attention. The government has adopted temporary regulations that allow suppliers of basic foods, fuel, medicine and emergency clean-up products to share information. It allows for a coordinated approach among suppliers to fill shortages or supply a specific area where there is a demand. There are sufficient petroleum products on hand and government is now working to secure its movement.

The government is also restoring law and order through increased deployment of the South African National Defence Force, the South African Police Service and metro police members in potential “hotspots”. There is also collaboration between the public through structures such as Community Police Forums and by working with law enforcement agencies. Law enforcement agencies have now fully reopened the N3 toll route between Cedara in KwaZulu-Natal and Heidelberg in Gauteng. Activities are underway to deploy 25 000 soldiers in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng.

These past few days have shown that South Africans are determined to fight for our democracy and freedom. We have seen how the people of our nation have risen to the occasion by rejecting division and protecting our democracy. We saw good people across our nation stand up as one to assist in preventing anarchy, looting and violence.  We saw the best of our nation, as people and communities reached out a helping hand to one another. The government of South Africa is working with all its social partners and community formations to respond with the situation.

The inspiring words of Nelson Mandela that “when people are determined they can overcome anything,” emboldens our efforts to meet the needs of our people.
