Ambassador Sizani Visits Berlin's Stunning Memorial of the Socialists

On invitation of Ms Voß of the Left Party, Ambassador Phumelele Stone Sizani last week visited the Memorial of the Socialists (1951), a grave site and memorial at the Central Graveyard Friedrichsfelde (1881), where numerous social democratic, socialist and communist politicians and activists have been buried.

After a short tour of the Karl Liebknecht House, the headquarters of the Party in Berlin-Mitte named in honor of Karl Liebknecht, the leader of the Communist Party of Germany, Ambassador proceeded to the Memorial Site in Friedrichsfelde, where he was given a tour by Dr Boris Kanzleiter, Director International Department of the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation and historian Prof Dr sc phil Jürgen Hofmann.

The tour took them to visit the graves of the socialist personalities at the curtain wall such as Wilhelm Liebknecht, one of the principal founders of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), Emma Ihrer, feminist and trade unionist, and Paul Singer, Co-Chairmen of the SPD. Subsequently they went to the (symbolic) graves in the rondel such as German Socialist leader and anti-war activists and socialists Karl Liebknecht and Rosa Luxemburg, as well as Ernst Thälmann, the leader of the Communist Party of Germany (KPD) during the Weimar Republic, to name but a very few.

Another stop was made at the original site of the Revolutionary Monument in honour of the murdered leaders of the KPD, Karl Liebknecht and Rosa Luxemburg. The monument had been designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, built in 1926 and destroyed in 1935 by the Nazis. The monument was not reconstructed. However, in 1982 a memorial plate was erected at the original site.

Last but not least the group visited the grave of Käthe Kollwitz, a leading German sculptress, whose artworks decried poverty, hunger, and effects of the war among the working class.
