Freedom Day 2020

South Africans will for the first time since 1994 not gather in numbers to commemorate Freedom Day on 27 April 2020. This comes as the COVID-19 continues to spread across the country, forcing government to impose lockdown restrictions and cancel all public gatherings.

This year’s Freedom Day will be celebrated under the theme “Solidarity and triumph of the human spirit in these challenging times”. President Cyril Ramaphosa will address the nation virtually and his address will be broadcast by various television stations.

The commemoration comes at a time when government continues to introduce a number of measures to stabilise the economy in response to damaging impact of the COVID-19.These measures include a massive social relief and economic support package of R500 billion.

The Freedom Day celebrations offer us an opportunity to pull together over the coming weeks and months in the fight against the virus.
