Kunst am Spreeknie: Mak Manaka & Liz Crossley - Performance-Poetry Concert & Real Time Light Installation, 14.07.2012, 20:30-21:00 Uhr, MoBe - moving poets Berlin

Just returning from the 18th Genoa International Poetry Festival representing South Africa, Mak Manaka will perform his powerful poetry to live music at MoBe - while Liz Crossley simultaneusly creates a new work inspired by Mak and project it on him during the performance.

LIZ CROSSLEY
The core of my work is drawing and painting. This is where I started and where I continue to work most intensively using a wide range of media to make marks and cover surfaces. In the projections, installations and projects, drawing and painting continue to play an important role.

Crossley was born in Kimberley, South Arica, a city on the edge of the Kalahari desert. She received her BA in Fine Art from the University of Cape Town, and her Master of Fine Art from Rhodes University. Further studies were taken at School of Art, Berlin. Crossley has worked at the Freie Akademie, The Hague, The Netherlands; Woodstock Gallery and Central Institute, London; and as a freelance artist, Berlin, Germany. She is a painter who also creates installations and sound and light performances in the open air.

MAAKOMELE “Mak” MANAKA
Poet MAK MANAKA is a one of South Africa’s most recognized performance poets. His fresh, energetic and candid work, carrying a message of “art for social transformation”, has captured the imagination of people from all walks of life across the world - from Cuba to Germany, Italy to Jamaica, and, of course, South Africa. Mak is the son of the late Matsemela Manaka, a well known playwrite, visual artist and activist and Nomsa Kupi Manaka, a pioneer of African dance in South Africa. He performed for Nelson Mandela and Thabo Mbeki, shared the stage with acclaimed artists like Linton Kwesi Johnson, Saul Williams, the Last Poets, Ursula Rucker, Don Mattera, Gcina Mhlophe and Freshly Ground and was nominated for The Daimler Chrysler Poet Of the Year Award.
Mak has two published and sold out anthologies, "In TIme" and "Ïf Only".
