On January 31st, 2011, Siya-Bengezela teamed up with SHAWCO and provided disposable cameras to a group of 25 twelve-year olds from the Nyanga Township on the outskirts of Cape Town. The kids had 48 hours to take pictures before the rolls of film were sent to the printing lab.
A selection of the resulting images will tour internationally and all proceeds from the sale of prints will go directly to the Nyanga Community Centre, located in the heart of one of South Africa’s most violent and impoverished communities.
Siya Bengezela eV is a nonprofit organisation founded in July 2011 in Berlin by Julia and Myles Lord, Julia von Bismarck, Philip and Betty Borchardt, Dana Brandstetter, Charlotte von Wrede, and Celia Schlüter.
Our aim is to initiate and support art projects in the townships around Cape Town in order to provide local kids with new spaces, platforms and tools, as well as foster new relationships between South Africa and Germany.
“Siya Bengezela” means “We are shining” in both Xhosa and Zulu.
