Mr George Henry Johannes Mr. Johannes was a full-time activist of the African National Congress (ANC) in Angola and Zambia where he worked as a specialist researcher and radio journalist with Radio Freedom. |
He was appointed the Administrative Secretary of the ANC's Department of Information and Publicity in Zambia and was transferred to the ANC’s Office in London where he worked as the Administrative Secretary and journalist with “Sechaba”, the ANC's Official Organ.
He was a member of the ANC's Youth Executive Committee as well as Youth Section Secretary and Chairperson in the UK. In 1987 he was appointed the ANC's Representative to the World Federation of Democratic Youth (WFDY) in Budapest, Hungary.
Mr. Johannes completed his Secondary School education at Trafalgar High School in Cape Town. After leaving South Africa, he studied at University College Cork, Ireland and graduated with a First Class BA Honours degree in Philosophy and History. He continued his studies at Reading University in Berkshire, UK and graduated with a Post-Graduate Diploma in Careers Guidance as well as a Master of Education degree. He worked as a Specialist Careers Adviser at Reading College of Technology and enrolled for a Ph.D. degree with the University of Leicester. He submitted his thesis in Political Economy in 1989 and joined the staff of the University of London, Birbeck College as a lecturer of Masters Students.
In 1994 he returned to South Africa to assist with the ANC’s election campaign and in 1995 joined the newly established Department of Labour as Director of International Relations.
In April 1997 he joined the Department of Foreign Affairs and in November 1997 was appointed Deputy High Commissioner at the South African High Commission in London.
After returning to South Africa in January 2003, he was appointed Director for UK, Ireland and Benelux Countries. On 2 September 2005 he joined the Embassy of South Africa in Berlin as the Deputy Head of Mission and Minister. Since the departure of Ambassador Chikane at the end of December 2007, he has been the Chargé d’ Affaires.
