A temporary residence permit may only be issued to a foreigner, who is not, or does not, become a prohibited person or an undesirable person. If issued outside the Republic of South Africa, a temporary residence permit is deemed to be of force and effect only after admission into the Republic.
Purpose of visit:
- Holiday (longer than 3 months)
- Voluntary and charitable activities (longer than 3 months)
- Research (longer than 3 months)
- Accompanying spouse or dependent children (longer than 3 months)
- Unpaid Internship at a company (up to 6 months)
- Medical elective or clinical traineeship (longer than 3 months)
- Studies (longer than 3 months)
- High school exchange (longer than 3 months)
- Studies as a participant in an established exchange programme
- Medical treatment
- Relative of a South African citizen or permanent resident
- Retired person
- Conducting work
- Installation, maintenance or repairing of machinery (up to 6 months)
- Managing an own business
- Other
PERIOD WITHIN WHICH TO SUBMIT AN APPLICATION
Our office usually issues a temporary residence permit within three (3) months before the applicant’s intended date of entry into the Republic of South Africa; we therefore kindly request that applications are not submitted prior to this issuing period.
On condition that a complete application is submitted, the time required to process the application is normally 15 working days. Please note however, that during the high season (June-August & November-January), the processing of applications may take longer.
RESIDENTS OF BAVARIA OR BADEN-WÜRTTEMBURG
Residents of Bavaria and Baden-Wurttemberg must lodge applications and pay any applicable fees and cash deposits at the South African Consulate-General in Munich:
