CUP OF CULTURES - Come and join us at the most South African and multicultural public viewing spot in Berlin

One hour before kick-off in Johannesburg the official public viewing partner of the Embassy of the Republic of South Africa, Haus der Kulturen der Welt, was already buzzing with fans in great anticipation for the first game of the FIFA World Cup 2010. After welcoming words by Dr. Bernd Scherer Director of Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Cassandra Mbuyane-Mokone, Deputy Head of the Embassy of the Republic of South Africa and German Minister of State for Culture Bernd Neumann the 600 international fans gathered in front of the public viewing screen and accompanied the game with loud cheers, clapping and dancing.

A mesmerizing performance by South African poet Lebogang Mashile and a stirring concert of the South African band Hot Water on the roof deck of the Haus der Kulturen der Welt completed a successful World Cup kick-off in Berlin.

The public viewing at Haus der Kulturen der Welt will continue throughout the World Cup and we invite Berlin’s diverse and multicultural communities – and particularly all African communities – to join us at Haus der Kulturen der Welt to celebrate their teams in a fun and friendly atmosphere with a great cultural program.

Concert: Freshlyground (RSA) - Fri 18.06.2010 | 19:00 h

With its high-energy fusion of rock, jazz and Afropop, Freshlyground not only have been named ambassadors of the South African soccer association, they also performed the official World Cup song at the World Cup Kick-Off Party with Shakira.

They’ve sold well over 200,000 albums in South Africa and in 2006, they nabbed the "European MTV Award for Best African Act”. In 2007 and 2008, they won "Album of the Year” with "Ma'Cherie". With seductive vocals and a heavy dose of township jive from singer Zolani Mahola, Freshlyground is "one of the country's great party bands and capable of even more" (Guardian).
